Abstract: Coal deposits forma Jiu Valley coalfield have in their structure big quantities of methane, that is being diluted in the process of exploitation through the ventilation system, this way being reduced the risk of explosions. Another method, that is being used in some coal mines, is called degasification, that consists of eliminating the gas before exploitation of coal and can be used in different proposes. In countries like USA, Germany and Australia this method is used successfully. Extraction of methane can be combined with underground storage of CO2, that will ensure a competitive advantage for clean coal burning technologies.
